Nineteen Special Years & Counting

I see…

a preschooler of yesterday,

a college student of today,

beauty of a young lady with ambition,

the nineteenth birthday of a remarkable daughter!

I feel…

proud to be your mother,

a rush of happiness hearing your laughter,

excitement every time I see your warm-hearted smile,

how quickly those nineteen birthdays have elapsed!

I hear…

your giggles as a toddler,

a young adult sharing her future,

a voice of creativity,

the tune to nineteen years of singing “Happy Birthday”!

I love…

your kind and caring heart,

the determination you have to succeed,

independence that you have embraced,

knowing those nineteen years have been a treasure!

Happy 19th Birthday, Maddie!

A Little Spine Poetry for Book Lovers

bounding down the hall

following the yellow brick roads

off to room 230 they travel.

yes, it was time

for reading in the wild

bringing words to life, 

because, well, word nerds they are

stepping into the reading zone.

no teaching reading in small groups today

working independently they would

notice & note,

use strategies that work,

and their notebook know how.

sharing their love of reading and books

certainly it is true

book whisperers they are.

What’s That Sound?

rising are the temperatures

herald the arrival of spring

stirring from their winter slumber

and emerging from hibernation

serenaded by the assembly of frogs

their boisterous peeps can be heard

it’s a chorus of frogs

for hours through the night

they embark on an annual journey

and have set up camp

to attact a mate

a gathering of suitors

and a long line of bachelors

the frog night club is packed

for that high-pitched long trill

that peep, peep, peep

is a common sound

on an evening in the spring

Wednesday Words

nothing like a piece of chocolate

to place a smile upon my face

maybe it’s a sweet treat

just because

maybe it’s a mini-dessert

instead of a piece of cake

peppermint patties

an all-time favorite

a dark chocolate Hershey kiss

i can’t resist

but a special message

in a tiny piece of Dove chocolate

seems to know

just what I need
