bounding down the hall
following the yellow brick roads
off to room 230 they travel.
yes, it was time
for reading in the wild
bringing words to life,
because, well, word nerds they are
stepping into the reading zone.
no teaching reading in small groups today
working independently they would
notice & note,
use strategies that work,
and their notebook know how.
sharing their love of reading and books
certainly it is true
book whisperers they are.

So fun!!!
I’m doing a Poetry PD on May 1st and I plan to share your poem!! Know you will be inspiring teachers in D.C.! And I guess to be a good presenter, I should give this a try…what will the spines create for me? And of course, I’ll have my 5th graders give it a try!! You have started something!! Thanks
I had fun writing it! Glad you are going to share. Your students will have fun with it too! Happy writing!
Wow! I love your poem! I think that the words you added to the titles fit in so well!
Thank you! I’m glad you stopped by my blog.
Great poem! Spine poetry intrigues me and I can never get it to work. You inspire me to try again.
Yes, give it a try again! You never know, the next try may be the one! Happy writing!
What a super-fun spine poem with some wonderful professional books!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Stacey! Thanks for visiting.
What a great poem! I think spine poetry can be difficult. It looks easy but actually takes a lot of thought. And I like the way you added to the titles to create your thoughts. Very inspiring!
Rose, your books and writing are an inspiration to me! I’m glad you stopped by for a visit.
I like how you took the spine poetry a step further and wove those titles between your own words. Thanks for sharing (and for the inspiration.)
Lisa, I’m glad it was an inspiration!
What fun to put this poem together – first in its spine form, and then to stretch it out. I’ll have to try this!
Thanks, Tara! It was a lot of fun writing this post.
I really enjoyed how you wove your thoughts and book titles together to create your spine poetry (squared?). Nicely done!
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I love that you added context to the titles in your spine poem. Hooray for your room full of book whisperers!
Thanks! I love making my own poetry “rules” so this post was a pleasure to write.
You’ve got me looking around for my own “spine poem!” And I see a couple books in yours I probably should read. Donalyn Miller is one of my favorites. 🙂 Thanks for sharing this.
Have fun scouting and writing, Lori! Glad you stopped by for a visit!
Hope you shared this with your book whisperers in room 230! So many titles I love in your poem, with only three I don’t know. I love your variation on spine poetry. I’m sure you’ll be seeing it around the blogosphere!
